Our History

Our transformation from a research station to a society supporting conservation at every level.

Beginnings

Founded in 2017 by Simon Nessman, Cedar Coast Field Station was created to serve as a research and education hub in Clayoquot Sound, providing remote access to conservation work in this ecologically significant region. Located on Vargas Island, the station featured fully equipped research facilities, labs, accommodation, and field equipment, making it an ideal setting for hands-on research and off-grid learning.

Early Years

In our early years, we focused on building strong relationships with diverse conservation stakeholders, including Indigenous Nations, universities, NGOs, and government agencies. These partnerships remain central to our success, driving our interdisciplinary work and supporting our ongoing mission

The Pandemic

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted revenue through facility rentals and educational programs, Cedar Coast Field Station continued to support educational initiatives and research remotely. In 2022, we transitioned away from managing the facilities, while still providing staff and resources to support external programs.

Cedar Coast Society

In 2024, we evolved into Cedar Coast Society, reflecting our transition from managing the Vargas Island facilities, now known as the Cedar Coast Arts and Ecology Centre. Rebuilt from the ground up, we now operate debt-free, focusing on impactful, community-driven research in Clayoquot Sound. Although we no longer directly manage the Vargas Island facilities, we remain deeply connected to the community and continue to foster collaborative partnerships.

Remote Operations

Now operating successfully as a fully remote organization, be it seasonally via rural field sites or remote online operations, our resilience is a testament to the passion and dedication of our team. With years of experience, we are sharpening our focus on high-priority conservation projects that have the greatest impact on our community. As we continue to strengthen our leadership with an expanded, diversified board, our vision remains rooted in the belief that accessible, innovative science is essential for addressing the pressing environmental challenges of our time.
